The firstborn child of every family in the land of Egypt would die, even the firstborn of their animals.  Exodus 11:1, 4–10  Old Testament Stories: The Passover The Lord promised that if the Israelites followed His instructions, the plague would pass over them and not hurt them.  Exodus 12:3, 13, 23  Old Testament Stories: The Passover The Lord told each Israelite family to sacrifice a perfect male lamb and paint the blood of the lamb on the doorframe of their houses.  Exodus 12:4–7  Old Testament Stories: The Passover The Lord told the Israelites to cook and quickly eat the lamb. While they ate, they should be dressed and ready to leave their homes. The Lord said if the Israelites did these things, their firstborn would be safe from the plague.  Exodus 12:8–11  Old Testament Stories: The Passover Like the Lord warned, the plague came. The Israelites crossed the sea on dry ground. They ran away from Pharaoh and his army.  Exodus 14:15–16, 21–22  Old Testament Stories: The Passover The Egyptian army chased after the Israelites. When all the Israelites were safe on the other side of the sea, the Lord let the water come down. The Egyptian army drowned in the sea.  Exodus 14:23–30  Old Testament Stories: The Passover The Israelites were free at last. They sang songs, danced, and thanked the Lord.
